Dumb, we Americans? Me think no so.

Its not like half of us believe biblical creation myths are literally true whereas evolution is just satanic lies and... ...oh. Nevermind.

You're right. We're too dumb to vote. Lets just bring in fascism, communism, or what-the-f***-everism. I live in Michigan, and we're ahead of the curve.

The author made one serious, in my opinion, error. He mistook the Socrates of The Republic with the Socrates of The Dialogs. The former was a literary character that Plato created to back up his anti-democratic arguments. The latter was an accurate depiction of the man himself. The chief reason for this is that when the Dialogs were written many people still remembered Socrates and would have rejected the later literary character. Socrates the man was about examination of life while Socrates the literary character was about proving most people were too stupid to make their own decisions.

So far as people, American or otherwise being too stupid for democracy we need only read Jefferson.

Men by their constitutions are naturally divided into two parties: 1. Those who fear and distrust the people, and wish to draw all powers from them into the hands of the higher classes. 2. Those who identify themselves with the people, have confidence in them, cherish and consider them as the most honest and safe, although not the most wise depositary of the public interests. In every country these two parties exist, and in every one where they are free to think, speak, and write, they will declare themselves. Call them, therefore, Liberals and Serviles, Jacobins and Ultras, Whigs and Tories, Republicans and Federalists, Aristocrats and Democrats, or by whatever name you please, they are the same parties still and pursue the same object. The last one of Aristocrats and Democrats is the true one expressing the essence of all.

300 million dumb people, thinking together, will eventually get a better answer than 548 rather smart people.

Perhaps, it is called evolution, but how many of them will have to kill each other off first?

Exactly why we have a Federal Constitutional Republic with a carefully drafted system of balance of power between branches of government, rather than mob rule at the polls for every decision. It doesn't work perfectly, or even work well at all at times, but it works better than any alternative I can conceive.
